Our Concept of Sutainability

The aim of sustainable poultry farming

The primary objective of sustainable poultry farming is to prove that the types of intensive and market-oriented production present in most countries with intensive poultry production are compatible with the requirements of animal welfare and environmental protection and that they provide high-quality, safe and therefore traceable foods both for consumers and for the processing industry.

In order to achieve this objective, the following criteria have to be met:

  • Poultry farming and the supply chains of egg and meat production have to be organized in such a way that they deliver high-quality products for human consumption and/or the processing industry.
  • If not yet available, new methods of production and housing systems have to be developed and introduced into poultry farming which promote the natural behavior and ensure the welfare of the poultry species.
  • All steps of a supply chain have to be monitored and documented in order to be able to trace the origin of the product with all its inputs and thus ensure its safety.
  • Primary egg and meat production have to be organized in local production systems to avoid long-distance transport of animals. In doing so, it is necessary to develop and implement suitable measures in high density livestock and poultry areas to prevent a local uncoupling of the subsystem plant production, for this is the only way to achieve a high resource efficiency and to minimize nutrient emissions.
  • Losses and an illness-derived output reduction of poultry populations have to be reduced significantly by optimizing the information systems and maintaining animal health in large production units by means of standardized animal health programmes and the implementation of hygiene concepts adapted to the particular farm by means of risk-oriented advisory and monitoring programs. The latter also serve to reduce the risk of the introduction and dissemination of highly-infectious poultry diseases.
  • Food safety has to be improved continuously through an implementation of risk-oriented examinations of the poultry population, eggs, egg and meat by means of neutral and objective monitoring systems and by creating and optimizing transparency in the exchange of information at all steps of the supply chain in order to improve the quality of poultry products but also to be able to better inform the public and the consumers via industry-wide communication concepts.
  • By creating an optimal cost-benefit ratio in primary production, slaughtering and further processing of poultry products, an increase in efficiency has to be achieved in order to remain competitive on international markets. Only then farmers and employees in the supplying and processing industries can gain adequate incomes.
  • Optimal basic conditions for the export of poultry products and the consideration of animal-welfare as well as the environmental compatibility in all steps of keeping food-supplying poultry species are indispensable prerequisites for the development of new and the protection of existing markets.
  • Poultry farms and the processing industry have to open their doors for interested visitors to inform them about modern, market-oriented poultry production. By means of suitable communication channels in particular consumers have to be informed about the fact that this is the only way to supply all population and income groups with high-quality and safe foods at an affordable price.

Only if the above described conditions are met, will it be possible to develop and strengthen the public acceptance for a modern poultry industry which is organized in efficiently working poultry farms and processing industries. Opening up poultry farms and processing facilities for eggs and poultry meat to the public and finding suitable ways of communication to inform consumers that the size of a poultry farm is not necessarily opposed to environmental and animal welfare issues, are essential requirements for a pro-active strategy concept and the previously mentioned criteria for a sustainable poultry industry.
